Experience the universal consciousness, Accessing this

Trichocereus pachanoi "San Pedro",
"giganton". The San Pedro cactus is indigenous to the Andes Mountains
of South America at an altitude of 2,500 m. elevation. These cacti are fast
growing, columnar, usually with six to eight ribs, growing tall, 3-6 m. high
with numerous branches. The skin is dark green to blue-green. The spines are
short to nonexistent, colored yellow to brown. San Pedro has adapted well to a
diverse variety of climatic zones around the world. The creamy white
night-blooming flowers are very large, showy, and deliciously fragrant.
Trichocereus peruvianus Matucana "Peruvian
torch".This San Pedro is 2-4m. high with numerous branches. This species
has very formidable spines that are brown and turn gray with age, reaching 1 ˝
inches in length at maturity. Flowers are large and white. First collected in
Matucana-Huarochiri, Peru at 2,100 m. elevation (7,000 ft). Can contain 3 times
the phytochemical composition (cactophagic repellents) of T. pachanoi making it
more resistant to fungal, bacterial, viral and insect damage. A rare and
beautiful cactus. Peruvian torch could be described best as San Pedro (T.
pachanoi) on "steroids". Peruvian torch is as fast growing as T.
pachanoi, but is somewhat more drought and frost tolerant.
From both cactus species is prepared a brew called San
Pedro "achuma", "huachuma" or "cimora". In Peru,
the brew is widely used, especially in the northern coast where the monks from a
pre-Inca culture known as the Chavin had a close and deep relationship with the
San Pedro. The main compund in the San Pedro cactus is 3,4,5-Trimethoxyphenethylamine or mescaline which was reported at a
concentration of 1.2% in the dried cactus. Besides mescaline, it also contains
phenethylamines and other substances in minimal proportions.
The name San Pedro originated in the idea that the
apostle Pedro holds the keys of heaven. Some researchers like Backeberg says
that the genus Trichocereus has 47 species, all native to South America. However, other researchers like Carlos Ostalaza states that there are only 13
species in the genus Trichocereus. The most common San Pedro is T. pachanoi but
various other Trichocereus have also been shown to contain mescaline. The
potency of San Pedro depends upon which species is used. Reports published in
scholary journals have shown San Pedro to sometimes be twice as strong as some,
but not all, peyote. In addition San Pedro grows a few orders of magnitude
faster than peyote. San Pedro can double in mass every year, while peyote takes
about a decade to grow to flowering size. San Pedro branches can grow to
18" by 4" in diameter, while natural peyote tops out at about 2"
high by 4" in diameter. San Pedro is certainly a formidable mescaline
producer and has 3 millenia of human usage.

"Currently there is serious confusion between T.
pachanoi and T. peruvianus. Some researchers like K. Trout believes that
"the confused state of affairs for peruvianus resulted from peruvianus
plants, such as those shown in the pictures, that hybridized with pachanoi as it
was planted up and down the Andes over the course of the last few thousand
years". Lots of very bad work and poor taxonomy has been published. There
is not a single truly meaningful published description of peruvianus; Britton
& Rose`s is clearly inadequate and Backeberg´s is no better. Either of
those 2 descriptions, as they are written, could be applied to half a dozen
other species. Other people like Ritter & Madsen claimed that T. peruvianus
is just a spiny T. pachanoi form. All I can see that this has done is to cause a
lot of peruvianus and similar looking plants that are not pachanoi to enter
cultivation mislabeled as T. pachanoi."
"Incredibly the rationale for synonymity seems to
hinge upon the wealth of intermediates that exist and does seem to take into
account the following: 1) How intensely pachanoi has been cultivated (This is
probably true of bridgesii and peruvianus as well) 2) How many millenia people
have cultivated it and how many different cultures this has involved. 3) The
broad range that this cultivation has occurred in. 4) How easily the
Trichocereus species hybridize. 5) How intensely variable all of the
Trichocereus species are, depending their growing conditions environment. I
doubt this will ever get clearly sorted out until someone actually does the
required field work in Peru" K. TROUT
